Leadership Opportunity for Youth and Young Adults

What is the YPM Board?
The Area Young People’s Ministry Board brings together United Methodist youth and young adults from DC, Delaware, Maryland and the panhandle of West Virginia to help shape the future of ministry with young people.
Together, board members listen for where God is leading, share ideas from their communities, and help strengthen ministry for children, youth, college students, and young adults across the Area.
Our goal is to help create a church where young people are known, valued, and entrusted to lead.

What Does the Board Do?
Members of the YPM Board help:
  • Contribute to the vision and strategic direction for young people’s ministry across the conference
  • Share insight about the needs and hopes of youth and young adults
  • Review and select Young People’s Ministry Missional Innovation grants (Fall) and YPM Impact Awards (Spring)
  • Strengthen communication and connection among youth, campus, and young adult ministries
  • Support the development of new opportunities for leadership and discipleship for young people
  • Encourage ministries like IGNITE, campus ministries, and young adult gatherings
  • Fulfill the responsibilities outlined in the United Methodist Book of Discipline for youth, young adult, and campus ministries
Board members also help lead or support teams focused on:
  • Family Ministry
  • Youth Ministry
  • Young Adult Ministry
  • Campus Ministry

Who Serves on the Board?
The board is made up of young leaders (ages 14-35) from across the area, including:
  • Youth representatives from each district (9)
  • Campus ministry student leaders (2)
  • Young adults involved in conference ministry (2)
  • Young adults connected to retreat and camping ministries (2)
This structure ensures that young people themselves help guide the ministry that serves them.

Time Commitment
  • 3–4 meetings per year (about 2 hours each)
  • At least one meeting is in person, the remainder are via Zoom
  • Some optional participation in ministry teams or task forces throughout the year
Total estimated commitment: about 10–15 hours per year

Why Serve?
Serving on the YPM Board is an opportunity to:
  • Grow as a leader in the United Methodist Church
  • Meet and collaborate with young leaders from across the conference
  • Help shape ministries that impact youth and young adults
  • Develop leadership skills that serve both church and community
Most importantly, it is a chance to help the church listen to and invest in the next generation of disciples and leaders.
If you feel called to help shape the future of young people’s ministry in our conference, we invite you to consider serving.
